The discipleship school now called WBC Cross Current began in 1998 with the intention of providing a practical approach to studying the Bible for young people to grow in their walk with God. The goal was simple: create an atmosphere where the study of God’s Word had immediate application possibilities, so that the Bible’s message could come alive in the students’ lives immediately. While the program has changed a great deal over the years as new opportunities for service and learning came along, the original goal remains – WBC Cross Current is about reading, understanding, and obeying the Bible and as a result being transformed into more dedicated servants of Jesus Christ!
There are three things students can expect from their time at WBC Cross Current:
Push Your Mind
While God has revealed Himself to us in His Word and His creation, human beings often seem blinded by our own sinful natures. There are bad habits, unhealthy dependencies, and idolatrous opinions that keep us from understanding what God is saying about Himself. Sometimes we need our brothers and sisters to take us under their wing and help us understand God better by journeying with us for a while. This often means dealing with really difficult things in our lives – a deliberate push to move through our personal sinfulness toward a life submitted more fully to God and His plans. We don’t always want to be pushed, but we almost always need to be!
Use Your Gifts
We all have abilities, gifts, and talents. Many of us struggle with submitting them to God, or even wonder if it is possible for our unusual passions and abilities to fit into God’s plans. We know that God is creative – nature makes that pretty obvious – but can He use abilities that are almost always seen as promoting sinful thinking and habits? We believe the answer to this question is found in laying our passions and interests before God and evaluating them on His terms rather than our own. People who do submit their lives completely find that some things God keeps, some things God cuts out of us, and some things get reworked and set apart for special service in His Kingdom. WBC Cross Current is a great place for students to figure out which is which and get practical training in the use of their gifts and abilities!
Change Your World
God is going to accomplish His purposes – it’s a fact. Sadly, we often indulge our sinful nature, and in doing so, remove ourselves from being a part of it. If we can succeed at transforming our thinking and surrendering our gifts to God, there is no reason that we cannot accomplish the things that God sets before us AND be blessed by it at the same time. God has given us a mandate to spread the message of Jesus Christ at home and to the ends of the earth. The world WILL be changed by God’s work in our lives!
